Paço da Ega stands on a hilltop, surrounded by superb views, with a 20 000 m2 estate, comprising a forest of secular oaks, pines and olive trees. It is a medieval building, erected on the ruins of the ancient Ega Castle, dating back from the first half of the 12th century. This castle was built by the Templars on an earlier Moorish fortress, conquered by D. Afonso Henriques. Belonging to the Order of Christ, in the 14th century, it was rebuilt in 1508, and it still proudly exhibits several Manueline doors and windows, as well as some Roman traces, probably from an ancient fortress at the same site.
Paço da Ega was recently restored and converted into a Manor House, opening its doors to all those eager to discover the history of Portugal and to enjoy a comfortable stay. |
