BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Nicaragua is the largest Central American country with about six million inhabitants, bordered by Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east.
Its official language is Spanish.

Tourism has increased substantially over the last five years, in spite of the country lacking a somehow adequate tourism infrastructure.
Nicaragua displays a splendid landscape of its volcanoes (17 in total), lakes, mountains and tropical forests. The Isla of Ometepe is becoming very popular with the tourists that come here to see and hike the twin volcanoes that rise out of the freshwater lake.

  • Managua

Managua, the nation’s capital has neither many old nor historical buildings. The city was destroyed in 1857 by William Walker’s mercenary army and in 1931 a violent earthquake also destroyed much of it. Again in 1972 its center was severely damaged by another earthquake. However colonial architecture may still be seen in the National Palace and the Cathedral.

  • Leon

Leon, the second Nicaraguan largest city, is the intellectual capital of the country: it features one university, some religious colleges, the largest cathedral of Central America and several colonial churches.

  • Granada

Granada, the museum city of Nicaragua , has many beautiful buildings, of which the fortress-church of San Francisco , the churches of La Merced and Jalteva and the Government buildings are just a few examples.

Nicaragua has a large choice of beaches, some more sophisticated, supported by a good tourist infrastructure, others almost deserted with basic and economical accommodations:

Near Managua there are Pochomil and Masachapa.

South of Managua, towards the border with Costa Rica , there are San Juan del Sur, El Coco and Ocotal.

  • Montelimar

Montelimar, the largest sea resort of Nicaragua is only 70 kilometers from the capital.

Nicaragua has a rich, diverse folklore and music, and an enchanting and colorful variety of ethnic cultural and festive events. A visit to this country may very well be an experience beyond your expectation.
