The Dominican Republic shares with the Republic of Haiti the Hispaniola Island , a sunny paradise in the Caribbean .
Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, it took about 500 years for Hispaniola to become known for the unique beauty of its beaches, its folklore and friendly people.
